I entered the realm of academia in a more unusual fashion. Since 1973 my business partner and I (I joined in 1987) have managed a private practice in a very low socio-economic neighborhood in North Philadelphia. The caries rate and subsequent need for comprehensive oral rehabilitation was great. We had a difficult task of attracting pediatric dentist to partner with us in a most demanding setting. Our solution came in 1995, when we developed a pediatric dental residency program. We pride ourselves on providing expedient, conservative, affordable and humane dental treatment. Conscious sedation is a reliable behavior management regimen for our program. We perform 225 cases each month, 95% of the patients are completed at one visit. We go above and beyond the existing guidelines and have developed protocols that are both effective and novel.
